Guide to NZ Damselflies

There are two parts to this page, an "expert system" guide to the identification, based on their colour and other differentiating attributes, and a list of links to damselflies by their common and Latin names, for the experts.

The structure of this part of the document is as follows: there is a one-line differentiating description of the animal - in alphabetic order of colour - leading you to a more detailed description, illustrated, where I can, by photos of the beasts. Where I can't (yet!), I have attempted to provide a description from the book, with a view to enhancing it with my own observations and photographs when I can do so.

Because of the generally unpredictable flight of these animals, sample photos are mostly of animals which are not in flight.

There are 6 different breeds of damselfly in NZ - or there were when Rowe was writing his book (Rowe, 1987). Others may have arrived from across the Tasman, and some may have been lost due to habitat destruction and so on, but for the moment I am basing this site on the book. Note that, due to colour variations, there are more than 6 descriptions here; this is not a work of fiction, just trust me!
